Jack: Every week, Tyler gave the rules that he and I decided.

Tyler Durden: Gentlemen, welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club! Third rule of Fight Club: someone yells “stop!”, goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule: one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule: No shirts, no shoes. Seventh rule: fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

Jack: This kid from work, Ricky, couldn’t remember whether you ordered pens with blue ink or black ink. But Ricky was a god for ten minutes, when he trounced the maître d’ of a local food court. Sometimes all you could hear were flat, hard, packing sounds over the yelling. Or the wet choke when someone caught their breath and sprayed.

Someone: Stop!

Jack: You weren’t alive anywhere like you were there. But Fight Club only exists in the hours between when Fight Club starts and when Fight Club ends. Even if I could tell someone they had a good fight, I wouldn’t be talking to the same man. Who you were in Fight Club is not who you were in the rest of the world. A guy came to Fight Club for the first time, his ass was a wad of cookie dough. After a few weeks he was carved out of wood.

Jack: If you could fight any celebrity, who would you fight?

Tyler Durden: Alive or dead?

Jack: Doesn’t matter. Who’d be tough?

Tyler Durden: Hemingway. You?

Jack: Shatner. I’d fight William Shatner.

Sétima regra: as lutas duram o tempo que for necessário.

Tyler Durden: Hemingway. E você?

Jack: Shatner. Eu lutaria contra William Shatner.

GLOSSARY

Goes limp: This phrase refers to someone losing physical control of their body, becoming weak or unresponsive, often due to exhaustion, injury, or submission. In the context of Fight Club, it means that a fighter gives up or can no longer continue fighting.
Carved out of wood: This metaphor means someone has become physically tough, strong, or hardened, like a sturdy piece of wood. In the story, it describes how participating in Fight Club transforms people from being soft or unprepared (like cookie dough) to becoming tough and disciplined.
Fellas: A casual or informal term for “guys” or “men.” Tyler uses it to address the group of men at Fight Club in a relaxed, conversational manner.
Trounced the maître d’ of a local food court: “Trounced” means to beat someone decisively or severely, often in a fight or competition. A maître d’ is a head waiter or person in charge of seating guests in a restaurant. A food court is a casual dining area, often in a shopping mall. Together, this phrase means Ricky physically defeated the head waiter of a food court, symbolizing his moment of empowerment and rebellion.
Yelling: This refers to loud shouting, usually in a chaotic or emotional context. In the Fight Club scene, it captures the intense and wild atmosphere of the fights.
